Fly-in Brook Trout Fishing

Brook Trout, also called Speckled Trout by most people in Ontario, are one of the most beautiful trout species on Earth. They have a deliciously unique flavor and most people simply roll them in flour and slow fry in butter. Big trout can also be baked or put on the BBQ.

Percy Lake is where our trout fishing takes place. The Little Current River and the Kapikotongwa River run into the lake and then a much larger Little Current River flows out. Spring is the only time Brook Trout are accessible. Guests can drive their boat 5 miles down river to Betty Falls. Then get out of the boat and walk around to below the falls where they have access to the current and bubbly water. The Brook Trout travel up stream and stay below the falls while waiting for the May Fly hatch. Soon after the May Fly hatch the water starts to warm up. As soon as the temperature reaches above 53° the Brook Trout start to leave and head down stream to wait out the summer in parts of the river where cold springs are present.

Brook Trout like high pressure so a bright sunny day is the best time to fish for them. If it's overcast or raining don't bother. They also spook very easily so you need to wear dark brown or dark green clothes to blend into the background. You also need to be quiet. When walking trout can hear you so walk softly and try not to kick any rocks or sticks. It's also recommended that you bring chest waders as the water is high in the spring.

If the trout are biting well you can easily catch your limit and sometimes much more. If you catch ten trout then you are having a good day. They average between 1-4 pounds. The Little Current River is big enough to produce Brookies that are larger so don't be surprised if you hook into a 5 or 6 pounder.

If you catch a trout and plan on releasing it please wet your hands before touching the fish. Rubbing off the protecting slime makes them highly susceptible to disease. Wet hands help prevent this from happening.
